The Day of the Dead / All Souls' Day, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, is a deeply significant observance across many Latin American countries. Though interpreted differently by each region, it is fundamentally a time to joyfully remember and honor loved ones who have passed away.
This year, I had the privilege of presenting my altar at the Latino Cultural Center here in Dallas, TX. For this installation, I wanted to represent something deeply different and intimate. The first thing that came to mind was the idea of capturing the essence of every memory that represents my family members—especially those who profoundly impacted my life: my grandparents, father, cousins, and aunts.
My altar for the Day of the Dead installation embodies the idea that life after death continues to live within us. It is a joyful tribute to our ancestors, honoring their vibrant lives and the constant presence they maintain in our own. Instead of focusing on their absence, the piece celebrates their enduring spirit and the precious lessons they've left behind.
